The Cost of Compassion: How Misused Empathy Is Keeping Women in Business Broke
Last week, while going through the Brand from Scratch process with a friend, something clicked for me—and it’s something that happens far too often among women entrepreneurs.
We were deep-diving into her ideal client profile, when I noticed something missing. She had a clear idea of what her client looked like, where they shopped, what she struggled with… but when I asked her, “How much money does your ideal client make?” I saw a slight grimace.
It’s as though she knew she should write it down, but she felt uncomfortable.
I told her, “You must be crystal clear about the earning power of your ideal client because if they don’t have money, you won’t make any money. ” And more importantly, “You should not feel guilty about charging a premium for your service.”
That’s when it hit me—so many women are misusing empathy in business, and it’s keeping them broke.
When Empathy Becomes a Trap
Let’s be honest, women are socialised to nurture, to serve, and to support. These qualities are powerful, especially when applied with strategy in business. But too often, we let empathy become an emotional trap. We lower our prices, overextend ourselves, or avoid selling altogether because we “feel bad” that someone can’t afford it.
But here’s the hard truth: your kindness can’t pay your bills! If you’re running a business, you’re not just building a brand—you’re building a livelihood. And you can’t sustain that on guilt, discounts, and freebies.
Empathy should be a bridge that connects you with the right clients, not a barrier that keeps you undercharging and undervaluing yourself.
How I Maintain Premium Pricing—While Still Serving
Now don’t get me wrong. I care about the people in my community. I also understand that not everyone is ready for my highest-tier offers. But I’ve learned how to maintain my premium pricing without guilt, by building a business model that serves people at different stages of their journey and with different levels of buying power.
Here’s how:
1. Offer Payment Plans
If someone wants your premium service but needs a little flexibility, payment plans are a game-changer. They allow people to commit without the overwhelm of a lump sum. More importantly, they keep your pricing intact while providing accessibility.
2. Build a Value Ladder
Not everyone will start at your high-ticket offer—and that’s okay. Design a value ladder that meets potential clients where they are. That means having:
- Low-cost, low-touch digital resources (like ebooks or webinars)
- Mid-range workshops or group programs
- Premium one-on-one services or VIP days
When someone gets a taste of your value at a lower tier, it builds trust and makes it easier for them to move up the ladder.
3. Create Valuable Free Content
Your content can serve the people who can’t pay you yet. I write blog posts, host summits and send newsletters—because I know that even if they can’t buy from me now, I’m nurturing a relationship that may blossom into future business. Serving doesn’t always mean sacrificing your price tag.
4. Turn Them Into Affiliates
Empower those who can’t afford you to earn through you. By becoming affiliates, they can promote your programs and receive a commission. This way, you’re not just helping them access your world—you’re giving them a tool to elevate their own income. That’s empathy turned into empowerment.
BONUS TIP: If finacial inclusiveness is truly important to you, you can also make the commitment long term by opening a non-profit entity alongside your business. Engage donors to fund scholarships to support those clients who may not be able to afford to invest in your services on their own financial strength.
Don’t Apologise for Your Pricing
At no point should you feel guilty about your pricing—especially if you meet and surpass your clients’ expectations. If you’ve built something valuable, stand by it. Your pricing reflects the transformation you offer, the experience you’ve gained, and the legacy you’re building.
You are not in business to rescue people. You’re in business to solve problems—strategically, sustainably, and profitably.
So, the next time you feel tempted to lower your price out of guilt, ask yourself: “If I go broke trying to serve everyone, who am I really helping?”
