Is it just me, or does it seem like when, we, women are approaching mid-career, money isn’t as big a motivator to work as doing work we actually love. Don’t get me wrong, I want all my money, but it’s no longer the thing that drives you. If you’ve been in your career 10, 15, even 20 years, you’ve earned your stripes.  You’ve supervised, led teams, managed projects and launched initiatives. But when it’s time to step up, be visible and put your own brand out there, so many brilliant, seasoned women shrink back. Let’s talk about 5 reasons why women avoid the spotlight and 5 ways to conquer that fear and step bravely into your personal brand and expertise.

1.“Who am I to say that?”

Even the most experienced women can feel unqualified. Impostor syndrome doesn’t discriminate. Constantly questioning yourself and having negative internal self-talk is enough to scare anyone. That includes you scaring yourself.

2. We weren’t taught to self-promote.

In sweet T&T, and probably even in the Caribbean, ladies are raised to be humble; to be seen and not heard. But visibility is currency in the digital age. Silence is no longer a strategy. If you want to be recognised as an expert in your field or given credit for the work you do, you have to use your voice and speak up for yourself. 

3.Fear of backlash.

In today’s digital age, fear of judgement and backlash is a legitimate concern, but remaining stagnant is also something you should fear. Don’t let fear keep you back from building your legacy Nobody wants to be called “too much.” But too much for who? Being bold is how change happens.

4. Perfectionism

You’re waiting to be perfect.  You need to perfect camera, ring light, make up or some other thing that has no real impact on the value you can bring to discussions and insights around your expertise. Truth is—done is better than perfect. Every day you delay, someone else with less experience is showing up and winning.

5.Burnout and doubt

You have given everything to your career, and you don’t have the time or energy. After years of giving to everybody else, you’ve forgotten how to show up for you. But you can craft your brand to suit your life. Your time is now. It’s time to start building your brand and your legacy to leave for those coming behind you.

Here are 5 Ways to Step into Your Power Professionally and Financially

1. Start before you feel ready.

I know you are tempted to keep putting it off hoping to have everything polished and perfect. But you don’t need all the bells and whistles. Start with your voice. Confidence grows with action.

2. Embrace your experience.

Your journey is your gold. Your experience will provide the framework for your brand! Speak on your expertise, teach what you know, and monetize your experience by creating products and services you can sell.

3. Surround yourself with bold women.

Curate your circle with likeminded women. Women who are ambitious, confident and support your big moves. Your community is the key to meeting leads and winning opportunities. Your network changes everything.

4. Write your personal brand plan.

What do you want to be known for? It’s essential to get this out of your head and on to paper. Get yourself a “ Your Brandprint Year Planner” and write it down. Vision gives direction and helps you flesh out your ideas.

5. Remember your “why.”

You’re building more than a brand—you’re building legacy. Something for your children or maybe those who you mentor to hold on to long after you’ve gone. Do it scared if you must—but do it.
