3 habits to practise to develop a more authoritative persona

Making the mental shift to leadership is a big jump for some. If you’ve been on the 9-5 grind all your life and then you’re suddenly promoted to CEO, stepping into your role as an authority and the boss of your own brand can leave you feeling …well…scared.  For people who’ve decided to build a personal brand and grow a business it’s important that you believe that you’re an authority before you can convince anyone else you are.  If you’re ready to “be the boss” here are 3 things you should never be scared to do.

Charge what you’re worth

Pricing is always one of the most ticklish areas for new entrepreneurs. For starters, valuing your time and your expertise is not something you’re used to doing. They also don’t think about factoring other pricing influencers like client transformation and brand strength. While this may be acceptable as a rookie, maintaining starter prices when you have grown your brand and reputation, you sell your services regularly and deliver awesome service is not in line with you being an industry authority.  Your pricing says a lot about your brand. It tells people what to expect, it helps you attract your ideal client and it could position you as an industry starter or an expert. Don’t be scared to raise your prices to match your brand position, you only take away from your brand equity, your brand authority and definitely your bank account when you don’t.

Give unpleasant feedback

Any leader knows there are times that they have to be the “big bad wolf”. I don’t mean that you have to huff and puff and blow anyone down, but it does mean that you sometimes need to give feedback that isn’t always pleasant. In business, just as in life, people will not always get it right, but as new entrepreneurs we too often attempt to be polite because we’re scared to offend people. I can tell you right now, that does so much more harm than good because it not only undermines your authority making you look weak, but  you actually do anyone working with you a disservice because they never learn anything to improve their performance.  They’ll never have the chance to know where they have gone wrong, and you will always get substandard work. Giving unpleasant feedback isn’t just helping your authority but it’s also you defending your brand and ensuring that you always get the best quality work and service.

Ask for what’s yours

Being scared to ask for outstanding work and money is something else that has to change if you really want to start making that shift from employee to authority. I remember feel “weird” to follow up on outstanding payments or work owed because I didn’t want to appear “annoying”; boy am I glad I got over that.  The things we accept and tolerate is us subconsciously training people how to position us in their minds. While you may be caught up in your own storm of thoughts, your lack of communication speaks volumes. Never be afraid to seek out what’s yours. Your efficiency and persistence in going after what you want earns you a lot of respect and helps you to even reprogramme your own mind about what you will and won’t accept from others. You will be amazed at the shift your mind makes and the type of clients and suppliers you attract.  When you decide that you’re taking charge of every financial and business interaction by setting your expectations so when you ask for what’s yours, people deliver you will be happier and start believing you’re in fact an authority. 

Confidence plays such a huge role in developing an authority mind-set and a strong personal brand and it starts with the little things. If you aren’t happy with the money you earn, the work you receive or the service you get ensure you speak up and speak out.
